Amazon Unveils Plan to Reach Zero Emissions by 2030

Climate change is no longer a crisis to be thought of abstractly. We are currently living in its effects and weather patterns are likely to get more extreme in the coming years. Drastic measures must be taken.

Thankfully, a shift in how major corporations view their role in the crisis may be coming. Jeff Bezos has just announced that Amazon will take major steps to reach the goals set forth by the Paris Agreement a full 10 years early! Here's how they plan to accomplish that goal.

Amazon and the Paris Climate Agreement

The major change that Amazon will undertake to achieve the lofty goals they have set forth is purchasing 100,000 electric vans and getting them all on the road by 2024. Currently, Amazon is at 40% renewable energy and they plan to increase that to 80% by the year 2024 through the help of their new fleet of electric vans. The vans were purchased from Rivian and the first one will be on the road in 2021.

By the year 2030, Amazon plans to be emission-free. They have also committed to working with supply chain partners to assist them in also becoming emission-free. The Amazon announcement comes from Jeff Bezos himself on Thursday, September 19 at the National Press Club in DC.

The announcement comes just one day in advance of a planned Global Climate Strike. Tomorrow, Thursday, September 20, employees from Amazon, Microsoft, Google and others, plan to walk out of work in protest of climate-endangering business practices.
