Oktoberfest is Canceled - Here's How to Celebrate Responsibly from Home

For many, Oktoberfest is one of the year’s top highlights. It’s a time for celebration that’s full of good food, great friends, and of course, the best beers. Although Oktoberfest is canceled this year, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate. If you’re above the legal drinking age, then you can replicate the Oktoberfest experience from the comfort of home. Continue reading to learn how to do it.

Oktoberfest at Home

What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest is a German tradition with roots that trace back more than 200 years. First celebrated in 1810, the festival is now held over a two-week period in Munich. Oktoberfest is full of people in folk costumes like lederhosen. It’s also full of exciting entertainment options like games, amusement park rides, music, and dancing. This is why more than six million people visit the festival each year.

That being said, Oktoberfest wouldn’t be Oktoberfest without beer. Each year, around 2 million gallons of beer are consumed at the festival. This is what makes the event unlike any other.

Why is Oktoberfest Canceled?

Unfortunately, Oktoberfest has been canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Coronavirus is a disease that passes very easily from one person to another. This makes spending time in crowded areas incredibly risky. That risk is heightened when, as is the case with Oktoberfest, crowds are full of people from different parts of the world.

Given this, the organizers of Oktoberfest made the difficult decision to cancel the festival this year. They hope to bring back Oktoberfest in 2021. But, you can still celebrate responsibly from home! Here's how.

2. Have a Beer Tasting Event with Friends and Family Over Zoom

Oktoberfest is also an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and to make new ones. Although making new ones might be difficult this year, there are still plenty of opportunities to reconnect with old friends. For example, consider hosting a beer tasting event for your friends and family over Zoom. You’ll get the chance to bond with the people you love while trying out some great new beers. Zoom-based beer tastings could be the best way to replicate the feeling of Oktoberfest this October.

3. Enjoy a Beer-Themed Movie like Oktoberfest or Old School

It might be difficult for some of us to get excited about Oktoberfest at home. Watching one of these movies is the best way to get into the spirit of celebration. Oktoberfest and Old School are classic comedies that are as much about drinking beer as anything else. Consider watching one of these films while trying out some new beers. You can make the movies even better by watching them with friends and family members via Zoom. Start with a beer tasting and some conversation and then turn on one of these flicks. You’ll start feeling like it’s Oktoberfest in no time.

But most of all, please drink responsibly and don't forget to take care of yourself during quarantine.
