The Amazon Rainforest is on Fire: Here's How You Can Help

Earlier this month, Brazil declared a state of emergency over the number of fires that have been occurring in the region. Satellite images show fires in the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Rondonia, Para and Mato Gross. Amazonas is the most affected. The negative effects of this fire go far beyond Brazil and its neighboring countries. The Amazon rainforest generates more than 20% of the world's oxygen and 10% of the world's known biodiversity.

The world as we know it would drastically change if this rainforest was to disappear, impacting everything from farms to drinking water. The Amazon rainforest is often referred to as "the lungs of our planet." This is a matter that the whole world should be paying attention to.

Although it's unlikely you are one of the people who can actually help put the fire out, there are other ways you can help to protect the most important ecosystem we have. Check out this list for ways you can help!

How to Help the Amazon Rainforest

Rainforest Action Network: Donate to RAN to protect an acre of the Amazonian rainforest.

Rainforest Trust: Donate to Rainforest Trust to help buy land in the rainforest. Since 1988, they have saved over 23 million acres from major corporations.

Ecosia.org: Use Ecosia instead of Google. It's a search engine that plants a tree for every 45 searches you run.

Amazon Watch: Donate to Amazon Watch; an organization that protects rainforests, defends Indigenous rights and works to address climate change.

One Tree Planted: One Tree Planted works to stop deforestation around the world and in the Amazon. They will keep you updated on the impact your specific trees are having on the community.

Amazon Conservation Association: The ACA accepts donations and lists exactly what your money goes toward. You can help plant trees, sponsor education, protect habitats, buy solar panels, preserve indigenous lands and more.

Even if you're tight on cash, there are ways to help that don't necessitate a donation. Sign petitions, call your local government, make your voice heard! There's no cause more worthy than the safety and well-being of our planet. Every little bit you can contribute helps, even if it just means getting the word out.
