5 Big-Time Public Figures Going All-In on Giving Back

In the past several years, there has been a growing trend among major companies, CEOs and other public figures to make huge donations to a variety of causes and charities. Sometimes these public figures take action in response to a social crisis. Other times, their philanthropy goes towards causes they believe in and work to address on a regular basis.

Here are a few notable public figures who have gone all-in on giving back to the community!

Public Figures Giving Back

1. Jeff Bezos: The richest man on the planet, Jeff Bezos, has plenty of money and power that could potentially make a huge impact on our society, when applied to the right cause. Recently, the Amazon CEO pledged a whopping $2 billion towards a new Bezos Day One Fund to help fight homelessness and improve education for low-income families and communities. The effort, announced just last September 2018, will create "a network of new, non-profit, tier-one pre-schools in low-income communities," according to a message released by Bezos on Twitter, in addition to "funding existing non-profits that help homeless families."

2. Chris Long: In 2017, Chris Long, defensive end for the Super Bowl winning Philadelphia Eagles, made headlines by committing to donate his entire 2017 salary to charities working to improve education in Boston, St. Louis and Philadelphia (all cities he's played for in the NFL). This year, Chris Long has again committed to donating a portion of his salary. A quarter of his 2018 salary, over $600,000, will be donated to the First Quarter for Literacy program. According to Chris Long, the goal of the donation will be to get 75,000 books into the hands of children.

3. Sara Blakely: The founder of SPANX Sara Blakely has dedicated her success to helping others. She founded the company in 2000 while working out of her apartment. Last year, the Sara Blakely Foundation and the Center for Civic Innovation in Atlanta partnered to give 10 female entrepreneurs a full year of mentorship plus grant-funded development! Today, all 10 of these women are self-employed, thanks to their hard work and Blakely's commitment to giving back.

4. Metallica: This fall, rock band Metallica will play a special charity concert in San Francisco with proceeds benefitting their organization, All Within My Hands Foundation. The charity organization focuses on hunger and education, as well as encouraging people to volunteer. All Within My Hands Foundation is a relatively new 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, founded by the band members of Metallica. Through this charity, Metallica donated over $750,000 to food banks across the globe.

5. Dave Grohl: Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl recently announced plans to hold on auction of some of his instruments for charity. Instruments he used to record "Play", his most recent solo album, will be autographed by Dave Grohl and then auctioned off. Money made from the auction will be donated to organizations that help young musicians learn and play music.
